Using Benadryl to Treat Hives

Hives typically form on an individual’s skin due to an allergic reaction. Hives can affect any part of the body, appearing as red, raised, and extremely itchy spots. Thankfully, there is an effective option to relieve hives: Benadryl. Benadryl contains diphenhydramine which works by inhibiting the release of the histamine hormone.

Itch Stopping Cream

Rub Benadryl itch stopping cream on the affected areas to get instant relief. This medication can be safely used by everyone aged 2 and over as a topical treatment. However, follow the directions of use and avoid applying Benadryl for more than 3-4 times per day. It is also important to wash your hands thoroughly after applying the cream.

Benadryl Spray and Liquid

You may also choose to use the spray form of Benadryl, which can be applied a maximum of four times a day. For children aged 6-11, Benadryl Liquid may be a better option in treating hives. Follow the instructions on the label as it includes information regarding dosage according to weight. However, the standard dose is 1-2 teaspoons at a time.

Benadryl Fastmelt

You can also treat hives in children with Benadryl Fastmelt. Children aged 6-12 can take up to 2 tablets, which is determined according to their weight and age, whereas adults can take up to 4 tablets a day. It may be helpful to read the chart included in the back of the box to determine the correct dosage.

Benadryl Kapgels

For children between the age of 6-12, you can also choose Benadryl Kapgels. Children under the age of 12 should only take one Kapgel at a time every 4-6 hours while older children and adults can take two at a time. You must avoid taking more than 6 Kapgels over the course of 24 hours.

Important Information to Keep in Mind

– Avoid scratching your hives at all costs as scratching causes inflammation, cracks, and can lead to infections.

– You mustn’t give Benadryl to children younger than 2 years old. It is also a good idea not to give Benadryl to children under the age of 5 without discussing it with their physician.

– Benadryl can cause drowsiness. Pregnant and breastfeeding women, as well as those with an allergy to diphenhydramine, should not take Benadryl.
